Virus/Spyware or Just A "Normal" Update from IT?

Did you boot up your computer this morning, then loaded some software and came across a message on your screen stating that there is some sort of error?
This happened to some of my co-workers today, as our IT department decided to install a piece of software that we would need for some upgrades in the near future. The only problem was that they didn't do their homework and I got bombarded with questions and complaints of when they try to load Microsoft Word, they keep getting a registration error message.
Of course, I had to contact someone in IT and they explained that this was going to be used later on in the near future for some upgrades that everyone here will be using. The people that are having trouble with it can uninstall it for now. What bothers me is the fact that I honestly thought it was some sort of virus or spyware that got into our computers. They should have released some sort of note, e-mail or something along the lines of this to let everyone know that this was coming. They should also have worked out all of the bugs before installing this into everyone's computers.
Lesson learned: contact your IT department if you are not sure what happened with your computer. It really may be a virus or spyware that your system may have contracted, so you want to be safe, not sorry.
